What Is a Yearbook Portrait?

A yearbook portrait is a formal, head-and-shoulders image that your school will include in the senior section of the yearbook and other senior year photos. Most high schools in the South Jersey and Philadelphia area require these portraits to be submitted by early fall - most by mid-October.

Unlike the full senior experience, a yearbook portrait is more traditional: clean, neutral backgrounds, simple posing, and a professional finish. But that doesn’t mean it has to be boring or stiff. At Lisa Mongulla Photography, we specialize in helping you look and feel like the best version of yourself—natural, relaxed, and confident.

Preparing for Your Yearbook Portrait Session

Let’s make your session smooth, relaxed, and picture-perfect!

Whether this is your first time in front of a professional camera or you're used to being center stage, a little preparation can make a big difference. Here are a few tips to help you feel confident and ready to shine:

Wardrobe Choices

While most yearbook portraits are on the formal side and restricted to school requirements, if you would like to bring a dress, suit or something that fits your style, let's do it! Think simple, classic, solid colors with clean lines—neutrals, jewel tones, or even a nod to your school colors if you’d like! Avoid logos, busy prints, or anything overly trendy that might feel dated later.

Hair and Makeup

Keep your look natural and polished—you want to look like yourself, just a little extra polished. If you’re getting a haircut, aim to schedule it about a week in advance so it settles in naturally. Touch up your roots or trim your ends if needed. Bring lip balm, a hairbrush, and powder to freshen up before we begin.

Personal Touches & Props

Even for a simple yearbook session, feel free to bring a personal item that reflects who you are. Whether it’s special jewelry, your sports jersey, equipment, instrument, letterman jacket, or even a favorite book or college sweatshirt, we can use it in a bonus shot or two if time allows.

Simplicity Senior Session

Perfect for the minimalist. This quick and easy session delivers a clean, polished image—ideal for yearbook submissions, cap & gown portraits, college resumes, social media profiles, and student IDs.

Essential Senior Session

A great fit for seniors who want just a bit more—more time, more variety, and more beautiful images without overcomplicating the experience.

Signature Senior Session

For the senior who wants variety and quality. Includes a personalized design consultation to help you choose prints, albums, wall art, and more.

Ultimate Senior Experience

This is the VIP senior portrait experience—ideal for capturing your full story with style, confidence, and creativity. We’ll work together to plan your locations, outfits, and vision so every image tells your unique story.

All sessions include digital portrait(s). Select the Signature or Ultimate Sessions if you would like to include your Yearbook Portrait Session. Just ask!

When Should You Schedule?

The earlier you book, the more flexibility you’ll have with dates—and you won’t be scrambling once school starts and schedules get busy.

Here’s what we recommend:

📌 Book your session now for July, August, or early September

🗓️ Avoid school sports, club, and college visit conflicts

⏳ Give yourself plenty of time to choose your favorite and review edits before your school’s deadline

You’ll also be ahead of the game if you need portraits for college applications, resumes, scholarship submissions, or early graduation announcements.
