the difference between senior and yearbook portraits?

Your "baby" is entering their senior year of high school (or college). This is such an exciting time for you and them! This is the beginning of the year of lasts. Of course, you want to capture every moment to ensure you have memories to last a lifetime.

As you prepare for their senior year, you will need to consider who you want to capture your teen's yearbook portraits. You will also need to consider how you wish to capture all the memories of their senior year. You can have your senior participate in a senior portrait experience to capture the many senior moments you know you do not want to miss. You can also work with a professional photographer for your senior's yearbook portrait.

Yearbook portraits and senior portraits are not the same. Read on to learn the difference between senior portraits and yearbook portraits.

What Is a Senior Portrait Experience?

A senior portrait experience is much more than capturing a photograph for the high school yearbook. It is much more than taking a few graduation pictures. A senior portrait experience is a personalized experience that is individual to each senior.

The portraits you receive from your senior portrait experience will capture your senior at different times during senior year doing what they love with people they love. These portraits can include athletic or other activities, locations personal to your senior, portraits with friends and family, and even portraits with their favorite pet. They can also include a professional headshot for college of their next career, as well as formal or casual outfits too.  These portrait sessions can occur on one day or several different days and throughout your favorite seasons of senior year to show how they are growing as they prepare for their next journey.

Your senior portrait experience can also include graduation portraits. These are not the standard cap and gown portrait. They may be portraits with a cap and gown, college swag, military uniforms, sports uniforms, friends and other props to help showcase their next move.

The idea of senior portraits included with your senior portrait experience is to tell the story of who your senior is and what they care about as they prepare to conclude their final year in high school (college too!).

What Is a Yearbook Portrait

A yearbook portrait is another important piece of your senior's high school portraits. It is used for the yearbook and usually includes your senior in the school color cap and gown, a tuxedo or velvet drape. The portrait is used in your senior's yearbook and can also be made into a school portraits worth framing and showcasing in your home.

Schools offer a photographer that can take senior portraits in school during different times of the year. However, you do not have to use the school photographer for your senior's yearbook portrait. You have the right to choose a professional photographer to capture your student's senior yearbook portrait and work with the school yearbook advisor. Working with a private professional photographer can ensure your senior's yearbook portrait meets the guidelines while also showcasing them in the light you feel they deserve.  There are deadlines, typically in the early fall, so don't wait too long to schedule your session!
